Suburban Chicago was the setting for this domestic
comedy that had all the warmth of a boa constrictor.
The Bundys were not your typical family. Although
they occasionally let it slip that they cared for
each other, every member of the household seemed
intent on belittling and putting down the others.
Al was a lowly but chauvinistic shoe salesman who
had been married for 15 years. His wife, Peg, was a
lazy housewife who almost never cleaned or cooked,
and their semi-delinquent kids Kelly and Bud were
forever at each other's throats. Al's bedroom prowess,
or lack thereof, was a frequent topic of conversation,
and there was constant bickering about money, the
kid's activities, and SEX. Their newlywed neighbors,
accountants Steve and Marcy Rhoades, were young
and gloriously in love until Al started explaining the
real world to Steve and Peg did likewise to Marcy.
Buck was the family dog. Marcy's husband authorized a
loan to finance one of Al's get-rich-quick schemes and,
when Al couldn't repay it, Steve lost his job at the
bank. After months of unemployment he left Marcy to
become a park ranger. A year later Marcy found herself
married to Jefferson D'Arcy, a guy she had met during
a drinking binge. Jefferson never had a job. He just
lived off his wife's earnings as a banker. Kelly, the
blond sexpot with an IQ a low as her hemlines were high,
somehow managed to graduate from high school but,
despite making a little money as a model, continued to
live at home. Bud, who was eleven years old when the
series began in 1987, was constantly trying to lose his
virginity, something he would not accomplish until 1994.
